Im installing linux on a friend of mines computer, but i ran intro trouble when i tried getting 3d acceleration from his TNT2 card. I have looked all over the net for guidance but there was nothing that helped.
I have tried different combinations with the nvidia drivers and linux kernel, from 2.6.4 to 2.6.12 and nvidia 6629 to 7174, nothing working satisfactory.
X always starts, sometimes displaying the nvidia logo correctly and sometimes just a white screen. Sometimes the mouse works for a minute or so, but mostly not, and it always hangs before i have the chance to run any programs :/
Im using Xorg version 6.8.2
So if you got 3d acceleration with your TNT2 card and running linux kernel 2.6, dont hesitate to give me a few pointers (what kernel version are your running, x version, what drivers with what patches and so on and so forth)
I have a TNT2 Ultra M64 Card that works fine with x.org 6.7, I have used it with version 6.8.2 also with several different 2.6 series kernels. I don't have any patches installed, I don't think the problem is your software, but your configuration.
Unrelated to you problem, I believe the newer nvidia drivers no longer support the TNT2.
Its true nvidia dropped support for the TNT and other older cards, but i only tested it with drivers still supporting these cards.
what nvidia driver are you using?
i tried fixing my problems by editing the xorg.conf per the nvidia readme.
Could you give me a few hints on your configuration?
Do you have mesa installed? is it needed or will it get overwritten by nvidia?
Thanks for your reply, im getting a bit desperate.
I believe I am running driver version 7167. I don't use Mesa or have it installed, that is the software-only implementation. I don't think it would be overwritten by nvidia, I would think the driver would call whichever library it prefers and the first choice is hardware-accelerated. I didn't do anything other than change "nv" to "nvidia" in the xorg.conf file. I wish I could be more help, I've had a lot of trouble installing the nvidia drivers in the past and sympathize with your cause.
Thankyou for helping me out, i think i just solved it! (it all works perfekt sofar)
What i did to resolve my unstability problems was the following:
edited the file usr/src/nv/os-registry.c according to the nvidia readme (agp related errors)
and added option "NvAGP" "0" in xorg.conf to disable agp (this is just temporary, will try with agpgart)
This solved all my problems, and now i get ~300fps compared to 90 before.
The speed should increase somewhat when i get agp up and running
