I am farely new to linux, but have been working with computer for a while. I have a laptop with Slackware 8.1, with the 2.4.18 kernel. About 2 to 3 times a day, my laptop will lock up. Well it seems to lock up , but I am able to ssh into it and kill process and reboot it. The keyboard seems to stop responding, once I reboot, it works fine. I have a lot spare parts for the laptop, its an off brand Inca laptop. A PII 466, 256mb ram, and a 10 gig hd. Any suggestions? Ram? Maybe the Keyboard?
Are you running the X when it locks up. If so which manager are you using. Check your screen saver and power managment selections. That was my rookie mistake. Other than that specify the process running. Also check Xfree86-4 config file and verify it is correct settings.
Yes, I am running X. It seems to lock up after leaving X, and going into a different console. I'll have to check the processes next time it locks up. I think I might disable all of the apm features, as well as in the bios. I am dual booting with Windows98, and it functions fine when going on standby and comming back up. In linux when it goes on stand-by, after it comes back up, It studders. If I'm playing an mp3, it will stop for a second, then continue, stop for a sec, and then continue. I have a graphical doc app that shows % of processor usage, wmFire, and that will freeze for a second and then return to normal for a few seconds, and studder again. If I reboot, everything works fine, but that's another issue. I will go through the XF86Config-4, and check for anything inncorrect. Thanks for the input.
