laptop freezing up, swap disabled?
Hi there,
I have a Compaq Armada M700 laptop with 128MB RAM/650 MHz Pentium III processor, running fedora core 2 (using fluxbox).
Lately, the laptop has been freezing periodically (several times per day). At these times, I have two terminal windows and mozilla open (3 tabs, one running an mplayer plugin to listen to a wma streaming file from digitallyimported.com). I took a look at top, and am surprised to see that I have only 2-4 MB RAM free, the cpu is 96% idle, and ABSOLUTELY NONE of the 256 MB of swap being utilized.
The mouse is non-functional at this point, all sound stops, ctrl-alt-backspace does nothing, as does ctrl-alt-del. I can only seem to recover by pulling the power cord and popping the battery, then restarting. The har d drive is slowly becoming more fragmented (went from 1% to 1.3% non-contiguous over the course of several months).
Could I have accidentally disabled the swap partition? Troubleshooting?
load averages are 0.05, 0.12, 0.15
I guess if I can't figure it out, I can throw another 256 MB RAM into it.
Thanks for you help.
P.S. The exhaust seemed pretty damn hot. I started running an external fan over the whole thing, will see if that helps.
UPDATE: Ok...I seem to be using about 4MB swap now....strange....can heat impede the implementation of swap?
