Is your iPod formatted as HFS+ or FAT? Depending on that, SuSE might not be mounting the correct partition.

HFS+ formatted iPods keep the data in /dev/sda3, but FAT-formatted ones keep it in /dev/sda2.

Hello jvale,

Thanx for your response.

I think - but i a total newbie what iPod concerns - that it isnt formated at all. I thought that gtkpod would do that be creating directories. Something i think linux is creating miracles all the time.

So did i missed a step?

I know that i the iPod-menu About it should say something about the format, but there nothing.

greeting
Marcel

As far as I know, all iPods come pre-formatted with either FAT or HFS+ and the required directory structure already created.

This is how you find out your iPod's filesystem in an iPod mini. On other iPods it should be similar, but I don't know if it's the same.

Go to 'settings' -> 'about' and (in my case) the last information is 'Format'. If it says 'Windows', it's FAT-formatted. If it says something else (probably 'Mac' or 'HFS'), it's HFS-formatted.

The strange thing is i cant find any references to the formating. But i think Windows cause like i earlier stated, i could see in the device note: /dev/sda3.

When i first plugged the iPod in, suse plugger found it. So i didn't needed to ad extra lines to configure it.
But now i'm thinking in a different direction. I can read the disk, but cant write to it. So i think its not mounted correctly and by that the disk is / looks block for re entry. DOes did make sense?

No idea... :P

But tell me 2 things:

- What's your iPod's format?
- What exactly is in the partition when you mount it? (As in, what do you see? Files, folders, nothing, etc...)

Strange... Did you connect the iPod before executing those commands?

To the OP - here is the fix for this:

http://www.gtkpod.org/TROUBLESHOOTING

Quote:
When connecting an iPod via USB to a 2.6 kernel machine the iPod will
be recognized but not work correctly. In /var/log/messages you'll see
the a bunch of "Buffer I/O error on device sd?" when connecting the
iPod (Jonas Bergler, Kevin Venkiteswaran)

Solution (by "jeffmock"):

Disable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION (File Systems -> Partition Types ->
Advanced Partition Selection -> EFI GUID Partition support) in your
kernel configuration, recompile.

Details can be found at
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...15#post1197015
I had the exact same problem with my ipod mini under SuSE 9.2. This fix corrected it.
