ipod mini - usb on a SuSE system
 

First off, hello to all. This is my first post ... and I hope I get many responses ;)

My problem is the following:
I am trying to mount my ipod mini as /mnt/ipod.
I am using mount -t vfat /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod. However, i get the message that it's superblock cannot be read. The ipod is recognized properly when it is plugged in - here my excerpt from dmesg - note the I/O error messages :

Another question : It seems he is using usb1 ?! I guess because of the usb 1-4 message ... however, i have usb2 installed. When I unplug the ipod and replug it in and run dmesg afterwarts it seems like the "Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi2, channel 0, id 0, lun 0" would change to "... scsi3..." dunno if that helps.

fdisk /dev/sda2 gives the message that /dev/sda2 could not be read.
please excuse that I cannot give the exact error messages since my system language is german :scratch:

System :
Suse 9.0 on kernel 2.6.5
ipod mini (silver :D )

The ipod is Windows-type. I have tested it , and it works perfectly.

I would really appreciate your help on getting it to work with usb. I have tried several howto's and asked people that know quiet a bit, but it did not work out. I don't want a 250 euro paperweight :)

I have had the same problem with Suse 9.1 and the new version of the 20GB iPOD. Suse recognizes the ipod ... but just gives errors when trying to see the drive (see below),

Any success fixing this with the mini-ipod? Anyone know if the newer ipods are formatting the disk differently than the older ones?

I have this same problem on a newer (Click wheel) model 20GB, not a mini, so I think it may be a problem in all the newer models. I have submitted a support request on www.linux1394.org to see if they have any advice/thoughts, so I believe that right people to make a fix have been notified. I've tried every thing under the sun, so I am pretty convinced this is a compatibility issue.

Well let me jump in as well cos I have a new model 20gb ipod(which has the same setup as the ipod mini's) and getting the same problem regarding wrong super block, its a windows ipod so I assume its formatted to FAT32?

I am also looking to mount via USB because my firewire port is of mini-type on my Dell laptop.
Oh I had minor success mounting the ipod file system as USBFS.....Couldn't access my music though I assume just the contacts and calender stuff....?

Has anybody tried hfsplus filesystem?

Hrm, would you mind sharing what command you used to mount the file system?

If I recall correctly, there's two partitions on the ipods. The first stores contacts, etc. The second stores the music and the iTunes database.

i.e. drive detected as /dev/sda
two partitions are /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2

RebootKid, I mounted the ipod with usbfsf like so..........

su -c "mount -t usbfs /dev/sda /mnt/ipod"

But i can't remember but i could have been /dev/sda#

Also note I converted to disk with iTunes on windows(was getting desparate) don't know whether that did anything or not.

The new iPod on USB show up as sda1 and sda2 but won't mount in amy meaningful way. The OS sees the device and that there are two partitions.

I hooked up a friend's gen 3 iPod and it mounted correctly.

If I put this same Gen 4 40 gig iPod on my XP machine it let me see the disk and reports the format as fat32.

To sum it up, the gen 4 pos is somehow different from the gen 3. When setup on a Windows it gets two fat32 partitions that mount at /dev/sda1 and /dv/sda2. These cannot be read when mounted as fat32 or usbfs.

This is really frustrating.

just a question, have you tried mounting it as a vfat partition, as opposed to msdos?

i.e. mount -t vfat /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod ?

Yup,
This works like a charm on the gen 3 iPods. The gen 4 iPod says it can't read the superblock. If I just plug it in the automount mounts both partitions but I cannot change into them.

The auto mount results in:
/dev/sda2 on /media/usb-storage-000000795E30:0:0:0p2 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sda1 on /media/usb-storage-000000795E30:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8)

but changing there gives me "No medium found"

After umounting these I issue
mount -t vfat /dev/sda2 /media/ipod/
mount: /dev/sda2: can't read superblock

I've reinstalled the iPod too but no go.

As an FYI, upgrading to a 2.6 kernel doesn't appear to help

I'm wondering if 4g ipods have some kind of major issue.

Has anyone tried NTFS? I used to have the module for accessing a windows partition but have since reinstalled fedora core 2 and re partitioned..... I know that XP installations push for a NTFS installation so this could be a possiblity. I'm getting the module know and reinstalling it.....

Well before I finished this message I tried using ntfs..... Didn't work... Oh well

It's because Apple has redesigned the ipods... Supposedly there's a "generation 4" of the regular ipods that exhibit the exact same thing as the mini ipods.

That said, I've heard it works under fedora. Anyone feel like loading up the latest fedora and giving it a whirl? I'd do it, but I'm running out of room on this HDD for another install.
