If you are using yum, use the following:
Code:
yum install gcc*

Red hat IS NOT FREE !!!!!!!
it never was and never will be !!!
in order to install ANYTHING - YOU MUST have a paid for support license
No if's and's or butt's
you MUST PAY FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alos RHEL is mostly designed for use in servers and NOT for use on a home system
Yes in can be used on a home system -- but NOT EASILY !!!

unless you NEED and MUST USE RHEL 6.0 i would install "Ubuntu Linux" or" Mint Linux "
both are VERY new user friendly

AND AS A BONUS that "driver" will most likely ALREADY BE INSTALLED !!!

Redhat offered free linux up until 2003. I know this because I had Redhat 7 on a Pentium MMX 233 when I was in college. I also still have a "Learning Redhat" book that has Redhat 8 or something in the back of it.

Of course, the second part of your statement is technically true. If you want RHEL then you have to pay for it. They offer a 30day free trial still, but it is unsupported. However, Centos gets their source code from RedHat and recompiles and rebadges it. So, I guess, actually, you can get RHEL for free, but it's called Centos.

Unhappy Installing Ethernet Driver returns Error

Ladies and gentle men i'm yet yet to solve my ethernet card problem. My redhat 6.0 desktop v. does not detect my atheors ethernet card. So i got the correct driver and untar it but when i run it as u can see the output below there are a couple of errors, gcc is one of them. Trying to narrow the errors so i got the gcc from redhat and when i ran it i got some dependencies as you can see below at the bottom. Now, can anyone tell me how and where exactly i can get these dependencies? whether they come in one package and what's the name of the package? Bear with me i'm very new in linux, thank you.

[root@localhost r8168-8.022.00]# ./autorun.sh

Check old driver and unload it.
Build the module and install

to install
step #1
buy a red hat RHEL 6 license !!! a MUST -- you MUST buy a license to install software !!!!
step #2
activate your rhel6 account and install RHN for yum
step#3
install gcc ( the whole "Development Tools" group )
see:
Code:
yum grouplist
--- then install ----
su -
yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Librarys"

or if you are NOT going to pay for RHEL -- then DO NOT USE RHEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is a free version called
CentOS 5.5

As stated before, pay for your Red Hat. Second, How do you come to the conclusion that the Atheros chip in your system needs a Realtek driver? Wouldn't an Atheros-driver be better?

And, as also stated before, if you are really new to Linux and don't know anything about it, go for a more beginer-friendly version, like Ubuntu, Mint, PCLinuxOS, or, if you really want something from Red Hat, Fedora.

They will be installed automatically if you use yum to install gcc. But, as already stated before, this is only possible if you subscribe for the support.

I didn't say that i'm installing realtek driver for atheros card, that doesn't make sense at all. Ofcourse i've been trying to install same driver 4 the ethernet card.
Secondly, Yes I'm new to linux but i prefer to go on with redhat no matter how difficult it is. I don't look for cheap and easy things. If you have been following my posts on this problem you'll realize from the results that i've been catching up rapidly being a first time user which i'm sure many of you that are irrelevantly replying me wouldnt have. So if you dont know it just keep quite and don't try to discourage me using redhat. I've decided to use redhat and i've to find away to use it, period!
