I have had some moderate success, but it came at a cost!
I am a newbie to the world of Linux, so this might sound a little muddled.
Firstly, even though I eventually got my modem working after a fashion, KPPP still does not work with it!
I am running RedHat 8 personal edition.
The first thing I had to install were the Kernal header files. These are RPM packages available form the install CD's. I imagine that they are on your distribution as well.
After unzipping the lucent package (obtained from a web site recommended by
www.winmodems.org) I ran a script that attempted to compile the source code. This failed but recommended reading a file name 'compile_failure'.
This recommends running a script from the utils directory (one of the extracted directories from the modem download file). I think it was called ksh.sh but don't quote me.
Don't know exactly what this file did, but it appeared to redo my kernal headers, recompile various file for about 5 minutes. At the end of its run, this script runs wvdial (a text based modem dialer) and lo and behold, the modem made dialing noises!
I recommend starting the modem connection though using the network conections utility found under the Gnome desktop (It works with KDE as well).
The cost I'm referring to is that my sound card now doesn't work any more!
Also, If I try a later kernel now, neither work!
Hopefully there is someone out there who know more about incompatible modues and how to fix them!
Hopefully they can also tell me what this script did, and how I should have approached this issue in a more streamlined fashion!
