clicking noises in a drive is not a good sign.

Motors have an an initial inrush of ~5X at room temperature and more as it cools. If the shaft was tight it could borderline work in some boxes until it hits full speed. This is a 2.5" drive? USB ports are not specc'ed for 3.5" drives.
