Exclamation Can't get out of 24 bit color want (32 bit) also can't go to 1280x1024, nVidia?

Hello everyone. I actually got Linux installed and it actually is showing my desktop and everything works so far!

Problem is, The screen size won't go to any higher resolution, the max it will let me go is: 1024x768 with 60Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate is fine i think, but I would like to be able to go to 1280x1024 and also be able to have 32bit color rather then 24 bit. 24 bit is the max it is shown. If i try to change it to 1280x1024 the screen is all out of proportion, like the desktop is too big for my monitor.

I installed Generic nVida drivers for the 6800GT (which is the card i have) at the install of Mandirva 2006. Is this the reason for the decreased resolution and bit color? My monitor keeps popping up a message that says best view at 1280x1024. Its a NEC LCD MultiSync LCD 1770GX with Opticlear. My windows system does Nrun at 1280x1024 w/ 32bit color. Any help would be great!!

If you want to get the best out of your video card you should install nvidia's binary drivers. I have never done that on Mandrake so you're probably better off asking in the Mandrake forum - or just download the driver and follow the instructions for a manual installation. You will need to edit your X configuration file (most likely located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf), which you would have to do to change resolution and color depth anyway.

32 bits of color is the same as 24. The extra eight bits are for alpha transparency which is hardly ever used anyway.

Ohh i never knew that! I actually got it to work without downloading any binary drivers but i'm still going to go download the drivers to get the most out of my card like you said. Would you happen to know where I can find these Linux drivers for my card? Thank you!

If you have a 32bit Intel CPU like your signature here suggests, these are the latest drivers for you.
