SerenaVictoria: I notice you do not mention downloading and installing the CUPSwrapper printer driver from the brother/support site. I know it is a scanner problem but if you dont have it installed it may be the problem.

also could try connecting printer/scanner with a usb cable, and then try 'simple scan' to at least confirm it works that way. my brother wont scan if i push his buttons on the scanner but works the simple scan way...

my results of: scanimage -L
device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother DCP-L2520DW USB scanner
should not your results show WIFI scanner? if you use wifi?

Works for me if I first run 'brscan-skey', then files are transferred to ~/brscan/
Doesn't work for me. I run brscan-skey, get the prompt back, and nothing happens. I select scan to file on the printer touchscreen, and it say there is no connection. I've never had it work. Xsane scans from it fine, though. So do the cloud option and USB drive. Scanning to Brother is more of a PITA than I'm willing to put up with. I can live without using the touchscreen on the printer.

"SCANNER" is already registered.
If you run
Code:
brsaneconfig4 -r SCANNER
then the scanner can be unregistered. Then
Code:
brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=DCP-1612W ip=192.168.001.091
should succeed.

BTW - I note that you have a normal user prompt. I would suggest that you run these commands with root privileges, using sudo.

1 percent short of 100 percent success...i think...if if push enough buttons on my brother scanner/printer...

no worries thanks to allend. Even though i eventually had all the drivers i needed and installed, the scan key on my usb connected brother still would not connect to our motherboard(desktop).
i finally got desperate and tried allend's suggestion of a full frontal lobotomy...
i opened up an operating room (the terminal) and ordered up a brain scan: brscan-skey
brain dead...no response when you enter brscan-skey
so i get up and punch my bother again...right in his scan key button region
nothing...no instant gratification at alll
i glare at my brother and about 10 seconds later...my brother actually makes a noise...like...'a scanner darkly' working...
whats this...and then all goes quiet again...
there is some message on the tiny little lcd screen
i have to answer 3 riddles it seems...yes no and arrows up and down
there are no arrows on my brother so i close my eyes and press the minus key
i get a pop-up on my monitor...it looks like an image of what is on the scanner bed...
spooky magic...but i now have a working scanner button...
until i power everything down and back up again...
scan button refuses to work until i type in brscan-skey in terminal mode again
oh...and why the scanned image finally pops up in 'gimp' and not simple scan i dont know
the learning curve just to save the gimp image is just as steep as my slow brother scan key

sorry about this long sad story but just had to explain why my hair is falling out...

in short...
activate the scan key on the scanner...every time you power it up. (you have to open up a terminal and type: brscan-skey )
press the scan key on the scanner and hope for a noise (scanner powering up)
if it is the first time you have heard the scanner making noise be sure to squint at the instructions on the tiny teeny little lcd screen and select 'no' to make it go...to your pooter.

now keep in mind i use a usb cable, not wifi.
perhaps people using wifi need to push the wifi button on their scanner to make it run on wifi (cables?)...

Hi everyone,

I don't have an USB cable, but I'll get it and do the test.
BAout the drivers, I have them: when I open "software Manager" and search Brother softwares, it tells me that the following ones are already installed:
- printer-driver-ptouch
- dcp1610wlpr:i386
- dcp1610wcupswrapper:i386
- brscan4
- brscanskey
- brother-udev-rule-type1
- brother-lpr-drivers-common
- brother-cups-wrapper-common
I may need different or additional softwares?

I have run the command you told me and here is what I get:

serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo brsaneconfig4 -r SCANNER
[sudo] password for serena:
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo brsaneconfig4 -r Brother-DCP-1612W
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo brsaneconfig4 -a name=Brother-DCP-1612W model=DCP-1612W ip=192.168.001.091
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=DCP-1612W ip=192.168.001.091
"SCANNER" is already registered.
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo brsaneconfig4 -a name=Brother-DCP-1612W model=DCP-1612W ip=192.168.001.091
"Brother-DCP-1612W" is already registered.
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ sudo scanimage -L
device `brother4:net1;dev1' is a Brother *SCANNER :f[
device `brother4:net1;dev0' is a Brother *Brother-DCP-1612W DCP-1612W

Have I done something wrong?
Originally I have named the scanner/printer as "Brother-DCP-1612W", can I keep it and cancel the SCANNER one? I guess they are registered with the same IP address and this can be a problem (??just guessing).
Ehm...and why there is an "*" in front of the name?

I hope this makes sense.

Thank a lot to everyone for the help

Serena

You can use any name you like. You've configured the same scanner multiple times, and may have a mess on your hands. You shouldn't be using sudo to run brsaneconfig4, just run it as a normal user. If you run
Code:
brsaneconfig4 -d
you should get some information on what is configured. You'll have to scroll back up so see the output, because it runs pretty fast. It should run sane-find-scanner, which will probably find nothing, because it doesn't know about wifi scanners, only wired connections. Then it runs scanimage -L, which should find all the names you've registered. Then it looks for config files, then pings the known IP addresses for the scanners, and should be successful on one. If it succeeds, your scanner should work, at least to some extent.

I don't know about the asterisk. I haven't seen that. You might be better off deleting all those, and rerunning the config once as a normal user, using whatever name you like.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen how you're trying to scan. I use xsane, and it finds the scanner. Simplescan should do the same. I don't think you'll be successful just pressing the button on the scanner, you need to run the scan program from the PC. What have you tried, exactly?

On my setup, that information appears to be stored in /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brsanenetdevice4.cfg,which has permissions that allow it to be edited by a normal user, so perhaps you could edit that file directly.

I do not know where the * in the names is coming from.

Allend,

I have found the file you are speaking about. Inside it's writteN:

DEVICE=Brother-DCP-1612W , "DCP-1612W" , Unknown , IP-ADDRESS=192.168.001.091
DEVICE=SCANNER , ":fª[" , Unknown , IP-ADDRESS=192.168.001.091

can I do something here?

Thanks

Sere

On my system, the /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brsanenetdevice4.cfg file contains:
Quote:
DEVICE=SCANNER , "MFC-J825DW" , 0x4f9:0x283 , IP-ADDRESS=192.168.0.5
I suggest that you try editing your file to read:
Code:
DEVICE=SCANNER , "DCP-1612W" , 0x4f9:0xXXX , IP-ADDRESS=192.168.1.91
where XXX is the product ID for your device.
You should be able to get that information from the output of this command:
Code:
grep DCP-1612 /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/models4/*

Those configs say the scanner is on 192.168.1.91, but pinging it is unsuccessful. Is it really there? You should be able to put that address in your browser and access the printer. If not, your config file is borked. It looks strange in any case, you have strange characters in the SCANNER config. They shouldn't be there.

I did the grep. Didn't find anything.
I have checked in the files. The only scanner listed that it is similar to mine is:

0x035b,214,2,"DCP-1610W",133,4

I have tried to use the code "035b" as XXX (0x4f9:0x035), but still nothing.
Same with "35b", "035b" and "214"

I have also checked the brscan4-0.4.3-3.x86_64 driver package and cannot find an entry for your DCP-1612W. (Complain to Brother!)
I agree that the DCP-1610W model is probably the best match.

As sgosnell pointed out, there is still the question of the IP address being correct.
What does your device show?
Can you ping the DCP-1612W with 'ping -c2 192.168.1.91' or whatever address is shown by the device?
Do you use a modem/router that provides DHCP, and if so does the DCP-1612W show in the attached devices list?
Can you consistently assign an IP address to the DCP-1612W?
Perhaps running 'nmap -sn 192.168.1.1-254' will show the IP address of your device.

At this stage, I suggest you remove all the information in /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brsanenetdevice4.cfg, leaving an empty file.
Then run
Code:
brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=DCP-1610W ip=192.168.1.91
If all is well, then
Code:
brsaneconfig4 -p
should succeed, and timeout after 10 seconds.

PS - Your treat made me smile. I used to have a DCP-110C, until some idiot broke the hinge

Allend... I do love you!! it works!
I have to admit that I had lost hope...

So, the IP address was correct. I double checked it and also the wifi printing was working.
I emptied the file as you suggested and run the brsaneconfig4 code, it worked. I guess it wasn't matching the .ini file and the model?!?

I did a couple of test and it works with both SimpleScan and XSane. Now I'll reboot and try again, just in case...

Now the only thing that is not working is the scan button on the device it self, but doesn't matter: I'll scan launching the software and I'll try to solve this minor problem later.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN TO EVERYONE!!!

Sere
