One other question when it scans it scans as a pnm how do i get it to scan as a pdf or change it so it does cause when i send it as an email the people I send it to cant open it. Thanks again. Dan
i'm having a similar problem.
Printer/scanner DCP-1612W, connected wifi. The printer works fine but I can't scan...it seems like the pc doesn't recognise the device as a scanner, but only like a printer.
I have tried to follow the instruction markush gave but i'm probably doing something wrong
These are my groups:
serena : serena adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev sambashare scanner lp
(I have added scanner and lp as before there where not included)
And these are the scanners seen:
device `brother4:net1;dev2' is a Brother *Brother Brother
device `brother4:net1;dev1' is a Brother *SCANNER Brother
device `brother4:net1;dev0' is a Brother *Brother-DCP-1612W DCP-1612W
actually, i'm only using the third one, the other two don't exist (how can i cancel them? it just was my mistake as i added them with a mistaken name)
I am not sure if further modifications to certain files are needed on more recent editions of Linux distros such as Ubuntu 14.04 etc since these are not mentioned specifically.
thanks for your reply.
Mh actually I had downloaded LPR (deb) and the scanner driver but not the CUPS.
I did it now.
How can I check if I have installed them correctly (when I download them it looks like the system also install them automatically)?
I'm also checking the Scanner Setting file, but i have Linux Mint 17.1 which is not listed
The packages were installed (at least this is what I got from Gdebi)
I can see them in the directory: /opt/brother/
But when I run the command "dpkg -i --force-all" this is what I get:
serena-netbook ~ # dpkg -i --force-all brscan4-0.4.3-3.amd64.deb
dpkg: error processing archive brscan4-0.4.3-3.amd64.deb (--install):

Hi...
This probably means you are not in the correct location where you downloaded the files. You would need to use the "cd" command to navigate to the correct location. Please see here for a further explanation. However, since you've already installed the driver .deb files anyway, (I'm assuming you double clicked on them,) why did you try to run these commands?

Any further suggestion?
This means the packages are installed, so can you scan using the scanner tool or any other scanning program?

Reason: Corrections.
no unfortunately still not working.
I also run
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ brsaneconfig4 -q | grep Brother-DCP-1612W
0 Brother-DCP-1612W "DCP-1612W" I:192.168.001.091
This means the scan is somehow set, right?
I'm using the software "simple scan" and when I try to scan it tells me "unable to connect to the scan".
And when i press the button "scan" on the device itself it display "check connection" but after 1 minute it goes back to sleep mode (guess it doesn't find the connection...)
Did you try other scanning programs, such as the "Xsane image scanning program?" You can install it using Synaptic if you don't already have it. The next time you try to troubleshoot this, restart both the printer and scanner.
Also, how is your printer/scanner connected to your computer, USB cable or wireless? In addition, please open a terminal and post the results of..
Code:
lsusb
Code:
groups serena

Reason: Added information.
yes I did try Xsane as well, but the result is the same:"failed to open device 'brother4:net1;dev0'. Invalid argument."
Same error if I launch the printing from the terminal.
lsusb: it seems like it doesn't see the printer/scanner
