Thank you Markush. I was able to get him into a terminal interface. But you really walked him through the problem.

btw: the other thing that can cause a almost identical problem is a blank line at the end of a config file.

scanner DCP 1612W not working

Hi everyone,

i'm having a similar problem.
Printer/scanner DCP-1612W, connected wifi. The printer works fine but I can't scan...it seems like the pc doesn't recognise the device as a scanner, but only like a printer.

I have tried to follow the instruction markush gave but i'm probably doing something wrong

These are my groups:
serena : serena adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev sambashare scanner lp
(I have added scanner and lp as before there where not included)

And these are the scanners seen:
device `brother4:net1;dev2' is a Brother *Brother Brother
device `brother4:net1;dev1' is a Brother *SCANNER Brother
device `brother4:net1;dev0' is a Brother *Brother-DCP-1612W DCP-1612W

actually, i'm only using the third one, the other two don't exist (how can i cancel them? it just was my mistake as i added them with a mistaken name)

Thanks for helping me

Serena

Serena,

I assume that you have already downloaded and installed the LPR printer driver and CUPS driver from here:

http://support.brother.com/g/b/downl...w_us_eu&os=128

You probably need to also download and install the appropriate 32 bit or 64 bit Scanner driver further down that link page.

The Scan-key-tool may or may not be needed.

Information about the Scanner Setting file is listed here:
http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/li...eu&redirect=on

I am not sure if further modifications to certain files are needed on more recent editions of Linux distros such as Ubuntu 14.04 etc since these are not mentioned specifically.

Hi,

thanks for your reply.
Mh actually I had downloaded LPR (deb) and the scanner driver but not the CUPS.
I did it now.
How can I check if I have installed them correctly (when I download them it looks like the system also install them automatically)?

I'm also checking the Scanner Setting file, but i have Linux Mint 17.1 which is not listed

Thank you!!

Serena

Serena,

Gdebi is installed by default in Mint.

Right click on the downloaded .deb package (on your Desktop or in Downloads) and then left click on "Install with Gdebi".

Mint 17.1 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 which is not listed.

Perhaps another LQ member can advise whether additional file modification is needed.

This link for a similar Brother printer/scanner may help you:

Hi Beachboy2,

thank you for your help.
The packages were installed (at least this is what I got from Gdebi)
I can see them in the directory: /opt/brother/

But when I run the command "dpkg -i --force-all" this is what I get:

serena-netbook ~ # dpkg -i --force-all brscan4-0.4.3-3.amd64.deb
dpkg: error processing archive brscan4-0.4.3-3.amd64.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
brscan4-0.4.3-3.amd64.deb

serena-netbook ~ # dpkg -i --force-all brscan-skey-0.2.4-1.amd64.deb
dpkg: error processing archive brscan-skey-0.2.4-1.amd64.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
brscan-skey-0.2.4-1.amd64.deb

serena-netbook ~ # dpkg -i --force-all brother-udev-rule-type1-1.0.0-1.amd64.debdpkg: error processing archive brother-udev-rule-type1-1.0.0-1.amd64.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
brother-udev-rule-type1-1.0.0-1.amd64.deb

and when i check with the command "dpkg -l | grep" I get the following:

serena-netbook ~ # dpkg -l | grep Brother
ii brother-cups-wrapper-common 1.0.0-10-0ubuntu6 amd64 Common files for Brother cups wrapper packages
ii brother-udev-rule-type1 1.0.0-1 all Brother udev rule type 1
ii brscan-skey 0.2.4-1 amd64 Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool
ii brscan4 0.4.3-3 amd64 Brother Scanner Driver
ii dcp1610wcupswrapper 3.0.1-1 i386 Brother DCP-1610W CUPS wrapper driver
ii dcp1610wlpr 3.0.1-1 i386 Brother DCP-1610W LPR driver
ii printer-driver-ptouch 1.3-8 amd64 printer driver Brother P-touch label printers
serena-netbook ~ #

Any further suggestion?

Thanks a lot to anyone who can help!

Sere

Hi...

This probably means you are not in the correct location where you downloaded the files. You would need to use the "cd" command to navigate to the correct location. Please see here for a further explanation. However, since you've already installed the driver .deb files anyway, (I'm assuming you double clicked on them,) why did you try to run these commands?

This means the packages are installed, so can you scan using the scanner tool or any other scanning program?

Regards...

Hi guys,

no unfortunately still not working.
I also run
serena@serena-netbook ~ $ brsaneconfig4 -q | grep Brother-DCP-1612W
0 Brother-DCP-1612W "DCP-1612W" I:192.168.001.091

This means the scan is somehow set, right?

I'm using the software "simple scan" and when I try to scan it tells me "unable to connect to the scan".
And when i press the button "scan" on the device itself it display "check connection" but after 1 minute it goes back to sleep mode (guess it doesn't find the connection...)

Thanks!!!!

Hi...

Did you try other scanning programs, such as the "Xsane image scanning program?" You can install it using Synaptic if you don't already have it. The next time you try to troubleshoot this, restart both the printer and scanner.

Also, how is your printer/scanner connected to your computer, USB cable or wireless? In addition, please open a terminal and post the results of..

Code:
lsusb
Code:
groups serena
Regards...

Hi!

yes I did try Xsane as well, but the result is the same:"failed to open device 'brother4:net1;dev0'. Invalid argument."
Same error if I launch the printing from the terminal.

lsusb: it seems like it doesn't see the printer/scanner

Hi...

Let's pause for a second. What distribution and version of Linux are you using? Is it 64 bit? Also, please answer the following questions...

1. How exactly did you install the drivers? Please explain how you did this step by step.

2. Is your printer/scanner connected to your computer via a USB cable? If not, please obtain a USB cable and connect them.

3. Please open a terminal and post the results of...

Code:
sane-find-scanner
Thanks!
