BTW: MPlayer is awesome and played any format i threw on it so far. 157 video and 60 audio formats supported in my compile at the moment. That should make you wanna give it another try.
I know what you mean, but it's so much work and requires research into doing it. And it's basically people with my lazy mentality and lack of patience that causes us to use Windows since they have simplified everything. Now I feel like I take installing applications for granted.
Anyhow, I'll give MPlayer another shot. But you do realize that after this, I will probably be posting another 10+ threads regarding on how to install MPlayer cause I don't know jack.
Then if I can get that working, I'll try to tackle this ATI Radeon driver problem.
Hmm. Maybe you should just get Debian then and run an 'apt-get install mplayer' after you added the apt source for an unofficial mplayer package. Then it's even easier than using Windows because you don't even need to download anything manually. And don't tell me now you were using WMP in Windows. Debian is considered a bit harder to install and setup though but once it's done it's very easy to install/uninstall apps and the system stays clean even if you install and uninstall frequently. You could also take a look at the nearly foolproof Knoppix distro. It's a liveCD which you just pop into your drive and boot into a fully working system. No fully accelerated Radeon drivers as far as I know though but it looks good and autodetected all my hardware. Once the harddrive installer is fixed it will be a killer (if it's not done already). BTW: I use MPlayer in Windows too. It's even harder to get it running there and forget about a working GUI and support for all codecs the Linux-version can use.

Thank you for the suggestion. However, I put so much effort and time into Mandrake that I don't want start learning something new. I think I can keep up the fight!
I'm a big time newbie and I've read the previous posts and followed a couple instructions and I have gotten the driver to install correctly but still cannot get 3D acceleration. When I run glxgears, I get about 300 frames/sec, but some people have said that I should be getting much higher. When graphics intensive screen savers come up, I see lots of lag. I currently have the ATI radeon 9800 and from the previous posts I can see that it will be a pain to get the card working correctly but I really do want to try.
I am running RH 9.0 and I got the card to display through DVI at 1280x1024 @ 24bit. It just seems as though I am having trouble with the 3D acceleration part. If there are any suggestions, that would be great. Thank you.
As I figured out so far, I've got a problem with my mainboard (VIA A7V8X, KT400, AGP 8x) - I can't install the drivers properly because AGP 8x isn't supported yet. So I choose this solution:

Originally posted by jlpearce I tried the solution above last night, with some success on my RH9 box with a Radeon 9800 Pro. When I restarted X, I did get a display using the 9700 driver, at the highest resolution that I could get (which is what I wanted ) .
When I tried to use 3d acceleration, though, I got a blank screen, and had no access to the machine . I couldn't even telnet/ssh into it from another box! Finally got into a text mode console on reboot and switched back to the saved XF86Config file, and got back in. So this configuration seems to be the best that I've found so far. I'm not familiar enough with X configuration or the Radeon driver, yet, to try to figure out why 3d doesn't work, but I'll get back to it after I've figured out how to get my Audigy sound card to work
XF86Config lines::::::::
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
BoardName "PowerColor"
ChipId 0x4e45 #Use the chip id for Radeon 9700
EndSection
I have 3D acceleration enabled, but with glxgears I do get some 240 FPS.
I don't think this helps you, I havn't run any 3D application yet (how do I find out if my card is working fine? chrome (a game), that comes along with kde doesn't work, because I do have a lot of "dropping" frames, but I could play it smoothly with a radeon8500 card...
re: mplayer.. the vlc player aint too bad either..
BlinkEye - i have the same board as you and i got it to work with a agpgart patch specific for kt400, radeons, and agp8x boards.. uhh.. i'd have to find the link to the patch.. let me know if you want it.. flgxinfo should tell you if you have a real 3d renderer going..
but maybe you're link covers my questions up - I do see, that I do not have direct rendering enabled. I hope the installation procedure isn't that complicated...
so far it has been a pain in the ass to try to get running this card, luckily there are some people arround who know how to handle such problems
Have you changed in /lib/modules/fglrx/build/agpgart.be.c via_generic_setup to via_kt400_setup? That was my big hang up and after I did that I works fine for me. make sure you aren't outting in via_KT400_setup. I did that and took me a while to figure it out. If you have already done this and it doesn't work I feel for you. It took me a touch under 2 months to get mine working.
I dunno if you talk to me because I haven't found yet any patch for my KT400 mainboard. but as far as I'm concerned there shouldn't no longer be any problem with the new driver from the ati web-page (I was able to install them now properly, although I get a message while rpm-installing the package about not being able to use 3d hardware support).
now my glxinfo looks like this:

unfortunately there is still no direct rendering enabled and I'm wondering if anything went right because in the installation help posted on the ati page http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0328.txt it says that after running glxinfo you should get
Quote:
Typical output information (3D acceleration is working properly) may read like this:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI
OpenGL renderer string: FireGL 8700/8800
OpenGL version string: 1.2.1234 (1.2.3)
and even though I un-installed the conflicting mesa-rpm I still get its name on my fglxinfo.
b.t.w.: the game chromium isn't playable without A LOT of dropping frames, so I guess the new driver installation didn't change anything...
try this. go to your /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and open agpgart.be.c Do a find and look for 8377 I think. A couple of line below that look for via_generic_setup. You should chang that to via_kt400_setup.
save it.
then in /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod do ./make.sh
cd ..
./make_install.sh
then run fglrxconfig and make sure you select n for external agpgart module(default)
Then restart your Xserver.
well, you solution works well, I do have direct rendering enabled now. I'm still suspicious - glxgears spits out 85 fps (so does
fgl_glxgears), I can see the wheels turning very slowly, shouldn't that be the other way around?
last but not least: chromium is finally working again!
Can you confirm the ATI drivers work with 9800 Pro
Hey,
I have been trying to get the 9800 Pro to work on RH9 system with 2.4.20-20.9. I have all installed ok, although needed to use the force<tm> to get the rpm package to go in, as indicated in the ATI installation notes.
Now, it seems the 3D acceleration is not really kicking into action when I try tuxracer, and the XFree86 log indicates the following:
Quote:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(--) Chipset ATI R350 NH (R9800) found
Did you have to remove the Mesa GLX stuff to get the acceleration working? or is it just that there is not support yet for the 9800 PRO in the drivers?
