script will allow you to log a terminal session
to a file which you can then display?

Those scripts are made in karamba/superkarama. Bash does log the console up to a point. Google for karama, or superkaramba, or just figure it out by looking at your current scripts. And then see where bash logs it, and make a karamba program that updates it to your desktop. You can probably use the guts of the current display program.
