I just installed the gentoo 1.4. After I emerged kde, i did xf86config. But the keyboard and mouse are lost after startx. And my startx didn't start kde. What could be the cause? or is there something else I have to do before getting kde up and running?
I now use the Knoppix' auto-detected config. And the keyboard works, but still no mouse. (Both work in knoppix).
And when I startkde, it complains can't open screen, but I have screen for startx, though startx didn't start kde. Also, it repeats saying "can't connect to kpersonalizer". So I can't start kde.

Problem solved by modprobe-ing hid, i didn't need this module before. Maybe I compiled it into my old kernel.
However, when I startx, I only get a Twm (a plain WM with 3 consoles open), but not kde. Why?
And when I do startkde, I get
xsetroot: unable to open display '' (note: I have display in startx)
xset: unable to open display ""
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
kwin: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
(and goes on and on)
I finally got my way from your hints. I copied the working knoppix .xinitrc and .Xsession. Then startx does start kde perfectly.
I'm just wondering how to setup the correct configuration in gentoo, like manually or is there a script for that. Is the /etc/X11/Sessions/kde-3.1.2 doing just that?
