login from KDM to fluxbox with rox --pinboard after editing .xsession

I am trying to log in to fluxbox with rox --pinboard from KDM (KDE 3.2.3 / Debian Sarge) --- I've editied .xsession and it all works when using XDM but KDM only logs into fluxbox. It doen't read the .xsession file Am I missing something here??? I need KDM because I can easily make it log in to a user without an actual log in ( this is on a shared workstation) --- I'd be happy to use XDM if I could work out how to make it automatically log in a specific user.
Thanks

KDM seems to deal with this if you select the "default" session --- I didn't know that.
