Well guys, I was just wondering that whether is it a good idea to have a linux certification of some kind like "Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)" or is it just a waste of time and money and it has no benifits. What linux GURUS say about this.

In my opinion, certifications are where its at in terms of getting employed. Every interview I've had I've been asked if I have any certifications. Well I don't but I'm planning on getting RedHat certified at some point.

If you have the time and money then go for it!

Also there are a lot of threads on this subject so do a search if you want more opinions.

The pupose of linux certification is to help sell yourself. Some potential employers or customers are impressed by a certificate, others are not.

They are worth while! I am an MCSE, and a Linux+. I am working on my Solaris 9 Sys Admin cert right now ( two tests ).

You really need experience, but when you can put those certs on a resume, they help the potential employer realize that you are serious enough about the product to get certified in it. I realize that some folks give certs a bad name (those paper tigers who just cram, and take the test). All in all, you will always need a good balance of Experience and Certifications. For me, they have been very valuable when it comes to getting a bit extra pay in my salary

I'm tired of the old Catch 22 where employers tell you that you don't have enough experience yet how does one get experience if they can't get a start somewhere. I've become very disenchanted with the IT market since I graduated.
