Graphical login fail, text login works

If I bang my head any more, I'll split my desk :-/

I am running mandrake 9.1 on my notebook right now, and I have been updating it like mad, so I don't know when this happened, but. . .

All of the sudden, I cannot log into my system in runlevel 5. I can reboot the computer, I can change init from 5 to 3 to 5 again, and I still cant log in. I am using the correct passwd (tpyed e a c h c h a r a c t e r very carefully) and I can log in with the text login in level 3 or by <ctrl-alt-fx>. But in the graphical greeter, it just keeps shaking at me.

Unfortunatley, I cant wrap my head around it enought to know what to look for, so Google-ing it is out, nor do I know what to look for on this forum, so if anyone has any suggestions as to where this info could be located, please redirect me

I can post any logfile or config file that may be needed

am using system ver:
2.4.25-2mdk
i686
Mandrake 9.1
from ISO
Dell Inspiron 2500

Thank you.

Tim

have you tried it with different users?

Also, if you want to get into X, you can go into init 3, login and then do startx.

Yes. . .I actually created a new user, just for that purpose. I have also reset the password, thinking that it may be a bad password file of some kind.
