DSL config in Slackware

Just finished installing Slack 9. Absolute FIRST thing to get done is get it online so I can be searching for answers whilst I am working there

I did adsl-setup, then adsl-start, and I get:

.... timed out
/usr/sbin/adsl - start: line 194: 2007 terminated
$connect "$@">/dev/null
2>1&1

No idea what that means, but... I am running the A7N8X with the built in 3com and the nVidia solution, but I don't mess with nVidia's since linux doesn't recognize it w/out drivers. In Mandrake 9.1 the 3com works great. Of course, I used DrakConnect to get it up. When mandrake boots, it says "bringing up eth0" so I chose eth0 for my slack configuration as well. I didn't use specified dns in mandy (verizon provides) so I entered "server" in slack. Otherwise, username and password. What could be the problem?

This is the worst issue to have When your at least connected, its nothing to Google an answer or come here, but having to boot into windows every time SUCKS!!! Lol.

Configuration on slackware tends to be manual. Learn vi :-)

The file of consideration is /etc/rc.d/inet1 and it is fairly self-explanatory. You need to enter your IP address, your netmask, and your gateway if you have a static IP, otherwise do what you need to do for DHCP. You can check your ms-windows config if you don't know what you are using, at least I do believe I have managed to find such on the few times when I have been forced on that operating system.

Good luck, though it should be easy. Have fun in any case and come back if you can't get through it with a few more details of your system configuration and what you have tried.

That's why I installed Slack. I wanted a purer Linux that I could really dig into. I've learned a bunch from Mandrake (8.2 & 9.1), but it is sort of bloated and enabling me to be lazy Once I get past the connection issue, I think me & Slack will become good friends.

...headed back to it.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated!

Im on!! I downloaded anything I thought I might need while in windows, burned it (as I haven't set up ntfs read yet) and got started. I was going to try compiling 2.4.22 since it was what worked in mandrake, but I thought I would give the nVidia nForce2 drivers a try first. They worked! The 3com port is still not detectedl, but the nVidia port is working perfectly.

Just a recap then, for all the other ppl having trouble with this:

Install the nVidia drivers availiable here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261
Do 'adsl-setup'
adsl-start

Thats what I did, and I'm writing this from a fresh Slack install.
