ACPI shuting down when should be waking up

here's the thing:

i installed and compiled kernel 2.6 on my laptop (the distro is KANOTIX) just to get cpufreq working. Now i have that working but everytime i put the laptop on standby using the command:

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/sleep

wich is the command i normally use on all distros, when i try to wake the computer from standby it just shuts down!
By the way when i was choosing the options upon installation of the kernel i chose to built directly into the kernel all options regarding ACPI.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Thank you

Have you tried echoing "mem" ? Also, cat /proc/acpi/sleep and post it here.
