And remember to support the commercial Linux Game developers. It's about the only way we will continue to get quality up to date games. Savage2, Darwinia, Defcon, Etc.. (that is in no way meant as a slight to the community game developers.)
I do as well... xmame is stuck at v1.06 for some reason though. If you're running Ubuntu, kxmame (the KDE frontend) is really good.
I had a problem with recent versions of xmame. It seems, for me anyway, Gauntlet is unable to save and load states. Either 0.94 or 0.96 is what I keep - the first version that supported Gantlet: Dark Legacy and is still able to save and load the state in the original Gauntlet.
I have also had issues with xmame working it seams not to like games that the windows version can run just fine. Gxmame completely and utterly refuses to play anything but this may be because I'm missing something it uses to search for files that I have yet to figure out how to install. Listing dependencies seams to be a big issue with devs these days.
quake2 is pretty much a failure in trying to get running on modern linux it causes all kinds of weird issues ( mine was key repeat no longer worked in X had to press the key each time to repeat a letter) and refuses to start if you do not have real oss stuff working the alsa emulation doesn't seam to do what quake 2 wants done. Quake 3 i was unable to run this game unless i was root for some reason ( this was a while back ago I have not attempted to run this game for some time )
I have had some success getting games working starcraft for instance works almost perfectly under wine. Wow on the other hand works but has issues with intel graphics drivers. To be fair the linux drivers for the intel accelerated graphics is shitty at best anyway and the dev is rather unhelpfull in trying to resolve issues.
Hmmm haven't tried them yet I was trying to get it working with the stuff that ID gave out like years ago and also some GPL projects but they relied on things no long available from ID because of the age of Q2.
Ill try one of these installers and see what happens.
I second Savage, (s2games.com) Savage 2 is in Beta. Scorched 3D is also pretty cool.
Dos box and Wine open up a whole new world if you're willing to jump outside native.

Yeah, it actually appears to be the 3D rendered games using CHD's. Sometimes errors come up in the diagnostics.
What's really strange is that with xmame-SDL-1.06-4 on PCLinuxOS (downloaded from pbone), War Gods for instance runs well, but on xmame-SDL-1.06-6 (the one in the repositories) it doesn't allow you to start the game (much like the xmame in the Ubuntu repos).
As for Gxmame, I thought that project was dead? It probably only works with older versions of xmame.
Nah Gxmame is not a dead project and it works with the current version of xmame it just fails to find roms for some reason. Its probably just me not setting it up right.

That is strange. I'm using the 3.20 final(if I remember correctly) version of the engine and haven't had any problems. I would go as far as to say it's working flawlessly. Quake 1 and 3 work great for me, too.
OpenArena
Glest
Wesnoth
Neverball, Neverputt
BalazarBrothers
Frets on Fire
Ur-Quan Masters
Alien Arena :http://red.planetarena.org/ is another very cool game.
Just to name a few of the really cool native linux games. All of which are just a apt-get install away in Debian.
