There are many good games for linux. FreeCiv is a game similar to Civilization which is available @ www.freeciv.org . Also there are linux ported versions of quake and Doom3 which you can get from the ID website www.idsoftware.com.

Linux is behind the time with RTS games. We get most of the big FPS games. If you want to play RTS games I suggest buying a cedega subscription for 5 dollars a month, so you can run windows games. Before you purchase cedega (or try to get the free CVS) I would browse their forums and make sure what you want to play is playable.

Please do a search on the forums for lists of games that run natively in Linux...

I for one am getting tired of posting them:

http://icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php

http://icculus.org/%7Eravage/

Then try Googling for Linux games...

I recently downloaded a demo version of UFO alien invasion. It uses a modified version of the quake2 engin and it looks pretty good. The final version isn't complete yet but the demo is still very playable.

see http://ufo.myexp.de/ for the homepage.

Perhaps this should be a 'tutorial', so that the first thing you see upon entering is "What games are there for Linux?".

a few More

http://www.tuxgames.com (commercial)

they sell mostly games from the sadly closed Lokigames.com
don't expect good support from them - they are useless
but there is a big title of commercial (mostly old) games to choose from.

http://www.legendsthegame.com (free)

I don't know *why* they haven't put the link to download the Linux version.
But there is one - go to fileshack.com or similar and look for Legends for Linux
you will have to do an update also (please forgive me - I lost the code!)
so search their forums too.

http://www.vendetta-online.com (commercial)

That is a MMORPG style of a game, if you like that sort of stuff - they give you 1 month trial.
Yes it is commercial - dont give them grief they are nice people.

Uplink (commercial)

http://www.introversion.co.uk/

EnemyTerritory (free)

You would download that from FileShack or any such place. Don't forget to download the updates.

American Army (free)

http://www.americasarmy.com/
To some this is the best game ever that runs on Linux.
I don't know I found it hard to put up with a seargent shouting at me

Savage for Linux
http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/131247.shtml

To find more games try searching tuxgames.com or happypenguin.org
or fileshack/fileplanet with the keyworkd Linux.

Also,

I am desperately seeking a copy of Tribes 2 for Linux
I am willing to pay for the CD retail price.
I am finding it impossible to find a copy anywhere in the web

Lightbulb Not strictly a Linux game...

...but if you've the old Ultima VII game on floppy or CD anywhere, http://exult.sf.net/ will let you play it once again, on modern hardware! And they're working on the possibility of making new games using their engine.
