Has anyone ever done any tests how Cedega/WineX stack up against Windowses DirectX? How much FPS are you losing exactly when using Linux? Or gain, perhaps?
I did some UT2004 testing on my PC comparing my Windows XP (with DirectX 9.0c) to the latest Mepis (with no Cedega/WineX emulation). Yes, this means that I installed UT2004 without cedega/winex. Not to confuse anyone.
I got about 105 FPS stable in Linux (OpenGL) and 95 in Windows (DirectX 9.0c) in instant gib Face Classic CTF (everything on max with 1280x1024 res). This is kinda off topic though.
Well also without cedega, I installed NWN native. It also got higher fps compared to windows. I have winex installed but I haven't tried it but I suppose it'll be slower.
I remember trying Doom3 bacin in windows. It was borderline playable. The framerate would vary quite a lot, often freesing momentarily when going into a new room or chugging down when an enemy flew at me.
Then I installed the demo for the linux version. It was scary. Not the game itself but how stable the frame rate was. I never checked an actuial framerate (I dont' have the best of cards either) but as far as I could tell the frame rate was stable as a rock. Not once did it chug down like it did ALL the time in windows.
In my opinion a 100% stable framerate is much more than a high framerate alwayse drops when the enemy's leaping right at you.
The only game I really play with cedega is World of Warcraft, and I play it in opengl mode, I can do that with normal wine too.
In windows, I can get 30fps constant in Direct3D mode, 1280x1025 settings mazed. With cedega, settings reduced to a minimum in WoW, at 800x600, I get 4-6 fps in Direct3D mode.
There're lots of things that has to be considered before comparing only Cedega to DirectX performance wise. One of them, being your graphics card and drivers version. If the game natively supports OpenGL or not for rendering has a huge impact. Usually games that can run in OpenGL mode run as fast (or better) then Windows through Cedega. Examples as Jedi Knight 2, Quake 2 or Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I do know you can run some of these natively, but I've found Cedega to work just as well...
On the other hand, seems like games that do not support OpenGL natively, are slower. Looks like Cedega has to translate from DirectX to OpenGL (linux native). Indeed, this is just a guess and results may vary.
Cedega has come a long way and it works great. Definitely worth the investment. But remember that when judging Cedega's performance, you've a lot to consider too, not only Cedega itself. It sure is an important factor, but not a decisive one as graphics card, drivers and game rendering modes.
Regards!

I would like to point out that regular Wine isn't optimized for DirectX. I'm not positive about this... it may have no DirectX whatsoever, and it may have some. But if you want to use WoW in Direct3D mode, you should be using Cedega, not Wine.
I don't have WoW... is it possible to use it in OpenGL mode instead of Direct3D? Try THAT with Wine, and see what sort of performance you get.
