Its not just linux, my same games lag on my windows box downstairs too. I used to ping anywhere from 10-100, but now its like dial up speeds, 400-500. I am on a linksys router (I think its the router configuration, but I dont know what to change, I may be wrong)
No firewalls installed, its not linux, cuz like i said, windows downstairs does the same thing, surfs web fast, cant play networked games worth crap. please help!
You are not downloading things at the same time are you? I noticed a lot of people on other forums have this problem. They wonder why their ping is crappy when they downloading like 5,000,000 bittorrent files. Just a thought.
Well, if u are trying to play a half-life game (and I believe that quake games have the same command) try this....
This is for my DSL 768k connection. Change it according to ur Baud rate.
cl_cmdrate 50
cl_updatarate 50
rate 25000
cl_rate 25000 (if it gives u jibberish, like only max 0.00000 or something ignore it doesnt mean anything)
Thers more commands u can use, but those are the ones i realy use, and i realy see a difference, o and changing ur internet connections (on the game setup or internet or the steam start up menu thing) from the usualy default 28.8k or 56k to whatever u use ... k. If that doesnt work, i might have other things up my sleeve thats not comming to my head, but that should make a huge diff.
Ping the server IP from a normal terminal, not in the game. If you're still getting a crappy ping them run a traceroute and find out where the lag is, that will tell you if it's your router or somewhere else along the line.
