I'm trying to run Age of Empires using wine-0.9.30 on Ubuntu (uname -a: Linux chiccodoro 2.6.17-11-generic #2 SMP Thu Feb 1 19:52:28 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux).
Installing worked fine. After installation, I was told to install DirectX, too, from the same CD, as it was not found. I confirmed and succeeded.
Then I tried first to run it with
wine /path/to/Empires.exe, which won't work, as others on this forum also seem to have experienced.
Thereafter I tried to run aoesetup from my cd, where I can choose to play the installed game. The setup seems to load the DirectX I previously installed. Unfortunately the text's are black instead of white and unreadable. Also, when I am playing a game, on the bottom right corner, where a little map of the world is displayed, the map simply stays black all over.
The other problem is, I cannot activate sound output. This might be a problem with my audio controller (00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)), which already caused some problems in ubuntu at other times. E.g., i must run realplay using aoss in order to hear the music realplay plays...
In one old thread I read about winex. Is this really necessary? I don't like to register on any website only to download some package.
I've actually wanted to write a AoE clone for a while now.
Would anyone else be interested in it? (playing or coding?)
Of course
But I've never programmed a game before, but I always wanted to learn it I'm not (yet) a C/C++ programmer, but i've got 3 years experience in PHP and we are learning some C in the school, so i'm not absolutely a noob ^^
Do you know anyplace where I can get AOE Like music (Preferable like Age of Empires 1 and Rise of Rome)? That would be a Nice Help. Also what Distro do you use. You could be a tester.
If you have any ideas how to help please say
Your programming skills are a little incompatible though.
Also if any body wants to Make there own AOE clones go ahead. They may turn out better than the One me and my brother are making.

Nice, looks like you guys have a good start. Tell me if you need any coding help.
Im very good with C/C++ and AI. Things like path-finding, finite-state machines, and such.
Thx... maybe not yet
By the way... does anyone speak German?
I'm very interested in C/C++ but its a little hard to learn it without any human help.
Primarily i have problems with all these data types and their handling.

I have the Age of Empires music files coverted to .wav and .mp3 format if you need them. It's been 3 years since I've done any programming but I can still help by giving you the music files.

That would be nice but is it legal to use them for our game considering that Age of Empires is published by Microsoft?
