bash: tar: command not found
root:/sources# tar xf lfs-bootscripts-20130123.tar.bz2
bash: tar: command not found
root:/sources# tar xf lfs-bootscripts-20130123.tar.bz2
bash: tar: command not found
root:/sources# tar
bash: tar: command not found
root:/sources# tar xf lfs-bootscripts-20130123.tar.bz2
bash: tar: command not found

Try these commands
Quote:
echo $PATH
You should get the working path. Tar has to be in one of the directories you see. If not, set it up by the book.
Quote:
which tar
has a look for tar. I have it in /usr/bin, which might be $LFS/usr/bin in your case.

'which' is a separate package from BLFS the op may not have it installed if not try 'type' which is a bash builtin that gives similar info

This also looks weird:

It looks like PS1 shows the full path you are standing in, if that is the case then LFS isn't set correctly.

On the other hand: You are talking about chapter 7 which does not use the LFS variable (all is done inside the chrooted environment).

First thing I would look at would be the chroot command. Did you use it correctly (as mentioned here: reentering the chroot environment).
