Linux RHEL AS 4.5 installation problem in DELL server

Dear all

I'm getting problems while installing RHEL AS 4 update 5 (32-bit) in dell poweredge 2950 server. There are 5 HDD with RAID 5 (hardware controlled) and the actual space is getting 2.8TB and the whole disk shows me as /dev/sda1. When i go through the default installation it will grab all the space i.e. 2.8TB. but when I make manual partition like, /,swap,/boot,/home,/var etc. and assigne them 40-50 GB space and rest all space are unpartitioned, the installation is successfully done. But after installation after booting the screen is black and it only shows "GRUB" and stuck.

Please can anyone give me solution about this?

Are you saying you tried to install it with a single 2.8TB partition (sda1) and it didn't hang at the GRUB screen?

Can you boot into rescue mode at all? Seeing your grub.conf file may be useful.

Also have you ensured that in the BIOS of the server the boot order contains the hardware RAID controller?

Hi

I'm giving u the consecutive answer of your questions

Yes

No, not in rescue mode. Just clean installation

Yes, i have ensured that in the BIOS of the server the boot order contains the hardware RAID controller.

More clarification i need to add that, I have assigned
/ = 40GB
swap = 16GB
/var = 8GB

and rest of the space I remains unallocated.

Hrrm.. Strange. I suggest getting a LiveCD and booting from that, then checking your grub.conf file to see if there is some problem there. Sorry I am not sure what else you can do at this stage.

thanks for your early reply.

finally i have realize the solution. now the system is up and running. but the solution is little bit strange.

but i don't understand one thing, when i going to partition such a large partition like 2.8TB with fdisk, it doesn't understand more than 400GB space. It's really very strange.
