libxml 1 vs libxml2? in a LAMP install

I have libxml1.8.17 installed on RH9. I want to add PHP5 (got mysql and apache2 on). This PHP5 install needs libxml2-2.5 or greater aparently.

libxml2-2.6.20 won't install. ./configure seems to go ok but then, I get 1-2 recursive errors at make install, make finishes but rpm-q says 2-2.6.20 is not installed... the old one, libxml1.8 is still there of course.

So... I am figuring to rpm -e the libxml1.8 and retry but libxml1.8 is needed for the libxml-devel and a ?possibly more critical redhat-config-proc-0.21-1. So deleting might not be the way...? The goal is to get a version of libxml installed which the PHP5 install will accept? ideas? thanks,
