About updating kernel on reahat enterprise linux AS 2.1

i want to update kernel version from 2.4.9-e.3 to 2.4.20 to solve video card installation problem on AS 2.1,but after updating step by step,i found nothing happened to my kernel version.what's wrong?Is it different to update kernel on enterprise linux or must kernel be updated to 2.4.9-e.*(for instance:2.4.9-e.24)?

You should be able to use a vanilla linux kernel, though any service agreements with Redhat won't cover the custom kernel. I'd recommend sticking with the enterprise edition kernels just because they're specifically designed to be more stable, but if your hardware issue is a problem you should be able to use non-enterprise versions.

As far as the problem, how did you update the kernel...with a standard Redhat RPM or by compiling from the kernel source?
