Sounds like we're getting somewhere.
You should post full details if you want to solve this. See the first link in my signature and also this.

and yes squashfs is a thing for small systems made like 15-20 years ago so sue me i like a challenge.
Nothing wrong with squashfs, afaik every Linux installation medium (.iso) uses this.

The problem is that chrooting into alpine linux root installed onto the boxee primitive drive is just that a hack. I honestly don't know if it will even be possible to
use usb to serial adaptors and a null modem cable to install another distro onto this old system although i do know that a small distro like puppy linux slacko or tiny core linux
or maybe preferably alpine linux (which i know DOES have a fairly recent version of kodi would fit the bill) or even if these particular distros will install that way or even have support
for it. Although i DO know that slackware might be installed using said cable setup this is such a small drive 1 GiG ram and 1 GiG main drive some sort of usb solid state drive might have to be used
in addition to the system drive. So i am in the process of looking into it and so far i have not even been able to register to login to the sites of these distros. Maybe these guys haven't paid
their bandwidth bills i don't know. Does anyone know more about using serial port adaptors and a null modem cable to install linux on an embedded system like the one that i have here?
I am referencing this page:
https://docs.slackware.com/howtos:ha...l_installation
Granted this is a bit obscure and most people will just use a usb boot thumbdrive to install but i do not have this option.

^ You really have to work on your writing style, this is both visually hard to read, and written in a flow of consciousness style not suited for technical problems.

I looked a little deeper now, I sum up: boxee use some sort of hardcoded kernel signing that makes it impossible (?) to actually install anything else on there; all the hacks mentioned so far somehow manage to build a better system onto that, but none actually manages to install a current kernel/distro.
People have been struggling with this for almost 10 years; whatever options there are, I'm sure they're listed here

Why do you think a serial cable will help here? Is it one of the options listed on the boxee wiki?

Ok i didn't know about the boxee wiki i will have to take a look at it. Yep it pretty much looks like it might be a lost cause for re-purposing although i am sure
that there MIGHT be a way no one has found a way as of yet. Yeah and sorry for the confusion, going through some stuff right now. At least i know what i am up against.
Why hasn't the free software foundation or some similar organization gone after d-link and friends for this i wonder. Is it money?

You might want to re-read your own post #13, on both points.
