Mandrake vs. RedHat thread

My take on this is pretty simple. If you are looking for a desktop OS, I would recommend Mandrake 9.0. Easy to use, lots of options, etc.

If you are building a Server, I would go with RedHat. If for no other reason than it is clear that RedHat has put work into the "server" area. i.e. RedHat Advaced Server. Whereas Mandrake is pretty much focusing on the desktop enviroment. That's just my personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt.
I have used both Redhat 8 and Mandrake 9. They both have their way of doing things. In the end, just use which ever one you like best!

well.. hmm... I have Slack 3.5 on an old pentium now... harder than RH.

that's good. I still remember when I used to use Slack 3.1

I started with Mandrake 7.2 Very nice back then, just as it is now

hehe, I started with RH 7.2, so I'm having a little trouble with slack 3.5, I'll get over it though. Now I just need to get an ethernet card for my celeron so that I can network them together and put the x, ap, d and other such disksets on it. I don't have an extra cdrom, so I had to go with a floppy install.

I've read every post on this thread and cant find one that really answers the question. Now were getting off subject. Only a month old in Linux Years, I've jumped into the Wide World of Mandrake 9. I've tried RH 7.1 in the past but always had video hardware problems while installing it. Mandrake installed nicely and found everything and it's been a great tinkering tool. I learn something new everyday.
Then came m$ and Frontpage extentions which I have battled with for many many hours and lost. So we are gonna switch to RH8, downloading it as I type, and see if it makes a difference. Hey, you cant unleash linuxs full potential learning one distro.

I know my 2 cents is very little compared to all you Lincoln nickels out there.

By the way, this site is great. These aren't boring "what if" manuals. It's real problems that we encounter everyday or in the near future.

P.S. What's the stock symbol for Linux?

Stock symbol? Are you referring to something like "YHOO" for yahoo? Well I don't think there is one for linux in general. Different distro's have some, I think RedHat's is RHAT, though I am not sure on that. www.fidelity.com has some decent tools for looking things like that up.

If you mean "The mascot" it's definitely tux. www.linux.org has more info on that if you are interested.

ok, back to the subject of this thread. I just switched from Mandrake 9 to RH 8 this afternoon. I've only been using Linux for about 3 weeks and I will have to admit the switch was flawless. I didnt have anything important on the mandrake build so i formatted and ran the install and within two hours had everything setup the way it was before and more. Alot of packages I had to hunt down and install with Mandrake, RH did automatically.

From a newbie's opinion, so far RH is better than Mandy.

Oh and I cant say enough about the Redhat Network and the up2date tool.

Did I already say "Mandrake Rocks!"?

One major thing I truly think is a big PLUS for Mandy is that is by default will use LILO as it's boot loader. Not to start an off topic debate on boot loaders, but I think that most people will agree that *most* distros use LILO as their default bootloader. So when someone needs help, there appears to be more people able to help.

Something I do like more about RH though is it's (well old RH anyway) lack of "proprietary" tools. I didn't use RH very much, so I might be completely wrong on this, but other than it's very own RPM system which it created, it doesn't make it's own gui wrappers for easing system tasks. I do very much like Madrake's lineup of tools, like drakx and such, but I also see that as a huge problem when trying to generically troubleshoot.

selecting your boot loader in RH is a matter of checking on either...why is that hard at all?...it rather gives you the freedom to choose Lilo or Grub..unlike Mandy as you say it installs lilo only.
