'yum upgrade' wants to install older kernel

please forgive me i'm a noob to centOS and yum. Do I need to change a source list or something? My hosting provider just set up this machine and I need to install apache/php/mysql, etc on it and want to make sure it's as hard and safe as possible.

My uname:

[root@server2 ~]# uname -a
Linux server2.mydomain.com 2.6.20.1 #12 SMP Fri May 18 19:03:50 EDT 2007 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
Unless I'm mistaken, kernel version is 2.6.20.1.

Now when I try to use yum to upgrade, it tries to install 2.6.18

I thought you used

yum upgrade

to move from one version to the next (eg CentOS 4 to 5). Check the man page

Try yum update if you just want to install the newest versions of everything

The kernel I have on an up to date CentOS system is 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5, so it may be that your provider has added a later kernel themselves. My memory is that yum keeps 2 kernels, so it may be that this ends up being the second of the 2. Note that yum doesn't say that it's removing the existing kernel (which it will before it does)

Hm...OK so I'm trying to understand this. CentOS is configured such that yum thinks the latest kernel is 2.6.18 - is that right?
