To install a Linux system

My problem is that I am currently running windows ME and it is impossible to get anything done with it. So, I would like to install a Linux system, I am currently looking at ubuntu. I had fallowed the instructions, saved it to a flash drive, and the Ashton for some reason opened an old AOL page to set up a dial up connection. I don't know why it did this because I am connected to a LAN cable and can freely search the web on explorer. Does anybody know how to get around this?

Obvious spammer.
Why do many (not all) of these spammers
show up with a birthday of November 30th? Is November 30th some default birth date?

How about some information about which of the many ISO files you downloaded, what hardware you have (CPU, RAM, Storage, Video system, just for a start) and a link to whatever instructions you are following?
You have us flying blind here.

How do you know it's a spammer? I can't see any links to spam pages.

If the machine came with ME, I doubt any modern linux with a desktop will run on it.

There is also the issue of booting from a flash drive. Most systems of that era didn’t have that capability.

It’s, something that opens an “old” AOL page to set up a dial-up connection.

Actually, I assume it was “action”.

1. I don't see indication of spam. No links, or invites to contact them. Just a question.
2. There are people who do not/can not buy new computers on a regular basis. There are still computers in this world from the 95/98/ME era. I've got 3.

To the OP, I'm not sure which Linux distribution you'd need to run on your architecture (16bit/32bit?), but it would likely be a very old version. It would also likely not be secure by today's standards, and with limited capabilities. As a previous post mentioned, you probably would not be able to boot from USB, and would need a distro that could be installed from CD/DVD.

I don't disagree with the age of the systems, but there are several things in this:

...that would lead me to think spammer as well.
  • The user name. Two 'first names', with a middle capital letter. Seems to follow a pattern with such spammers these days.
  • They're CURRENTLY running Windows ME....yet the systems-ID icon here says Windows 10? Odd, since there are icons for other OS'es including Windows ME.
  • Supposedly running Windows ME...yet have a modern-enough browser to do web browsing? How, exactly? They say Explorer...how many websites these days are going to support that ancient version of Explorer??
  • They were able to download an ISO image (what capacity did hard drives have back in 2006, the absolute EOL for Windows ME, with mainstream support ending in 2003)? Largest someone would probably have would have been 200GB (and they were HUGELY expensive). And they're going to download how many GB's of an ISO image?
  • They 'fallowed' the instructions and saved it to a flash drive? Assuming they meant they burned the ISO according to the Ubuntu site...is Rufus/etcher/whatever going to function on Windows ME??
  • Why would anything (even whatever an "ashton" is), open an old AOL web page for dial-up access?
Just too much inconsistency, coupled with the date-issue.

Let's see if the OP actually posts back something to address these questions.

The biggest indication that it’s a bot, to me, is that nothing it wrote makes sense. This is colorless-green-ideas-sleep-furiously level of nonsense. And that’s even if I’m REALLY generous in factoring in excuses like online translators and autocorrect.

Indeed. Just had another one crop up...same naming convention (TomSnand), necroposted with a very vague question, and yet another November 30th birthday. Fits the pattern, although I hope not.
