KDesktop Error - "procewss for file protocol died unexpectedly..."

I just installed Kubuntu Edgy last night. Things seemed to be going fine. I need to copy some files to my Windows2000Pro NTFS C-drive, so installed ntfsprogs. Not knowing what to do with it once installed and not finding anything that told me, I didn't do anything other than post to these forums with a question.

When I shut down, Kubuntu wouldn't exit completely, but stalled with the progress bar for shutting down only 10-20% done. Not being very experienced, I didn't know what else to do other than just shut the power off, which I did.

Today when I booted, I got an Xwindows error message with title bar "Error - KDesktop" and message "The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" and an OK button. Of course, I click OK, but see no other change.

No drive icons are showing on my desktop, and in the \media folder, in addition to the two cd drives (cdrom0 and cdrom1) there is a cdrom shortcut. There are my two Windows partitions, and a floppy0 and floppy shortcut. Finally, there is a text file named ".hidden". I don't recall seeing the text file nor the cdrom or floppy shortcuts prior to not being able to shutdown and starting to get that KDesktop error.

Worst, when I plug in my USB thumbdrive, it is not seen.

Help please! Can anybody tell me what happened and what I can do to fix it? In a pinch, I'll reinstall, but I'd rather fix it if I can.

Thanks!

I don't know what causes the error. The few times I have seen it, I just restarted the X server (ctrl-alt-backspace) and log in again.

I'm seeing a similar problem trying to start Kubuntu from CD on an older laptop. It may be caused by having a slower CPU or not quite enough RAM. One piece of advice I found is to wait at the login screen until the hard drive light goes out before logging in.
