How to enable "Typing break" alert sound in GNOME?

Laptop: RHEL6 Workstation.
Desktop Environment:GNOME
Sound Preferences: Default Alert Sound set. Alert Volume enabled to maximum.
Keyboard Preferences: Typing break enabled.

PC: Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop Environment:GNOME
Sound Preferences: Default Alert Sound set. Alert Volume enabled to maximum.
Keyboard Preferences: Typing break enabled.

Now; in the laptop, after the typing break gets completed; an alert sound ( beep sound) is emitted.

But; in the PC, after the typing break gets completed; an alert sound ( beep sound) is not emitted.

In the PC; how to enable the alert sound( beep sound) after the typing break gets completed?

Aren't you Linux certified?

1. Is pulseaudio running on the PC?
2. Have you turned up other volume levels (pcm, master)?
3. Can you hear other system sounds?
4. Are speakers plugged in and powered on?

FYI, I listen to songs on that PC.

1. That you listen to music proves nothing. The music player might use ALSA directly.

2. Pulseaudio might be in "standby" mode.

3. Pulseaudio is known to be buggy as hell. Didn't they tell you that in certification class? Download and compile the latest version. Hint:

Alternatively, bind the key to a shell script that does something like "xkbbell".
