No sound

Hi everyone,
my an acer laptop sound stopped working today (doesn't sound in chrome, firefox, video player...) I reinstalled the system but it's still not working. alsamixer "select soundcard" only shows -default and in settings>sound>advanced>output devices there is nothing.
But for some reason Matlab errors do a sound. It's not laptop's problem since Windows sound works fine.
Thanks to everyone in advance

Not a Deepin user, but some basic diagnostics output would be useful here. Which version BTW? Are you using Pulseaudio?

Just in case this is helpful...

Deepin 15.11, and yes I have both pulseaudio and alsa (they come with the OS by default). What exact diagnosis you want me to run ?

Start by checking the 'Configuration' tab in pavucontrol (install this graphical utility if necessary). Check that the desired profile is set, as well as any pertinent levels.

You can also share this output...
Code:
pacmd list sinks|grep output
The also-info.sh utility can be used to diagnose at a lower (ALSA) level if necessary...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo
The output can be uploaded to an online server, and the link to it shared here for others to review and advise further.

Please do not do that again.

All sound issues can be grouped into

---bios or firmware issues

----software issues

----hardware issues

since you have reported that sound works on Windows we can eliminate bios and hardware issues.
So either a sound module is not loading.....blocked by a config file
(I won't explain that at this point)

or

your mixer levels are wrong

or

the sound module needs a tweak to enable it correctly...unless firmware is needed and failing.

ferrari is helping you with pulseaudio.....I will attempt to eliminate my suggestions.
ferrari has also suggested alsa-info.sh....but I prefer smaller simple commands as I am simple

please show the output to these commands..first 2 are for firmware issues

Code:
dmesg | grep error
dmesg | grep fw
lsmod | grep snd
aplay -l
aplay -L

pavucontrol output devices only shows "dummy", and in configuration it says no avaible cards.

pacmd list sinks|grep output
1 source output(s) available.

You have no driver loaded. Let's check the hardware. For internal sound cards (class 04 devices) do
Code:
lspci -nnk |grep -iA3 '\[04'
This will give us the chipset details for any audio devices present (with or without driver loaded).

For USB audio devices....
Code:
usb-devices

Try loading snd-hda-intel manually like this
Code:
modprobe snd-hda-intel
or perhaps specifying the model explicitly may be necessary eg
Code:
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=auto
Code:
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=generic
Then check your sound again. If it works we can make it permanent by loading the module at boot via an entry in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

sorry to butt in again...ferrari

I assume you meant

Code:
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
but I am thinking....altho I am pretty sure I never had the same hardware....I needed a position fix a long time ago on a dell.

Code:
modinfo snd_hda_intel | grep position
parm: position_fix:DMA pointer read method.(-1 = system default, 0 = auto, 1 = LPIB, 2 = POSBUF, 3 = VIACOMBO, 4 = COMBO, 5 = SKL+, 6 = FIFO). (array of int)
parm: bdl_pos_adj:BDL position adjustment offset. (array of int)
so after trying a simple modprobe command as per above....repeat either
Code:
aplay -l
# or
lsmod | grep snd
and report when you get a better result.

#################
Lets leap ahead and assume a simple modprobe fails

then we need to manually remove the module
then probe module again....with some extra bits
this can be tedious

let me show some examples....I give you root powers first so I do not need sudo at the beginning of each line
Be aware that the module loading may still fail...so you will get an error like no module found.
Keep the terminal open to do these

Code:
sudo su

modprobe snd_hda_intel
aplay -l # no improvement then try again

rmmod snd_hda_intel # if not found who cares
modprobe snd_hda_intel position_fix=1
aplay -l # no improvement then try again

rmmod snd_hda_intel # if not found who cares
modprobe snd_hda_intel position_fix=2
aplay -l # no improvement the try again
so all you are doing is trying to find the right position fix number
and the position numbers you may like to try are
-1, 0,1,2,3,4,5,and 6 but me thinks you can ignore -1 and 0
