Most Linux users would be turned off by the time used to compile.

Learning how to build a Kernel is a very important thing to know when using Linux.

I've compiled my own kernel for Debian, so that helped me when I had to for my Gentoo install, so far no issues.

dxqcanada,

There is no need to watch Gentoo install. You can go out, go to bed or whatever.

When doing updates to Gentoo, the compiles run in the background, so you can still use your system as normal.
