Is there a beginners guide to kernel building?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong board (should i be on the kernel one?). I'm installing gentoo for the first time and everything is pretty straight foreward. I've used sabayon, arch, and slackware so i'm not really alienated from the idea of customizing/compiling everything. The only problem i'm having is kernel compilation. I'm installing on a thinkpad t440p and have used this as a general reference, though not an exact one.

tl;dr t440p kernel, help, what do?

So here are my questions:
  • Is there a page similar to this that i can use to help me?
  • Is there a simple kernel guide
  • How can i figure out which modules enabled i need depending on the output of lspci

Thanks, though this isn't too helpfull in my case. I understand how to physically do it, i'm just unsure which modules i need to load in order to get everything working.

Thumbs up

For anyone else that stumbles uppon this thread in the future:

lsmod in the live cd. and then press / to search for those modules in the make menuconfig gui.
lspci -k also shows you loaded modules.

You can use the make targets local{mod, yes}config to do this from your current system - try "make help".
Made things much easier once these were introduced.
