Calculate-linux: Using the desktop version, couldn't make it work after the installation (it just didn't started). Using the scratch version, couldn't make the gui come up.

Why are you insisting on gentoo if you don't want to bear the cost of compiling ?. Bragging points ?.
My biggest problem is compiling the base system (first time compiling when installing) which is HUGE! After that I don't really mind compiling but not EVERYTHING. I don't want to compile GCC and Firefox for example. I want to have a choice. I would go with AUR but it doesn't work all the time in my experience.
