In linux GUI was provided by X Windows and nowadays there is wayland. GNOME?KDE use GUI toolkits GTK+/QT which typically depend on XWindows. Though you can use direct frame buffer with the GUI toolkits.

The difference is one has a GUI...the other doesn't. Otherwise, the Linux system itself is/can be identical. For example, Red Hat Enterprise 7/CentOS 7 does NOT load a GUI by default, but you CAN load one if you want to. The systems run the same software, same services, and are otherwise identical, except for the GUI.

Right...you obviously need LDAP installed to be able to use/work with an LDAP server. But those things aren't dependent on a GUI/CLI interface or not, but are more for user authentication behind the scenes.

...and none of this addresses the OP's question. Please read the OP's question and try to answer it. The OP asked what is the DIFFERENCE between a CLI server and one with a GUI. Also, both Gnome and KDE depend on the X windows framwork, as do ANY of the GUI toolkits.
