Well, x-window-system, but if you're speaking about random other packages, I enjoy playing with 3ddesktop (3d desktop switcher) and synaptic is very useful for browsing packages. Although, apt-build is another excellent package, as it is a extention of apt, to an extent, where it build packages on the debian mirrors for you, optimising them for speed.

The best package?

I guess it would be kernel-2.4.27-2-686 for my system.

What is a good backup tool in Debian ? Specially backing to CDROM ?

What happened to k3b ? It is in Knoppix 3.6 and I really liked it. Why was it removed from Debian ?

What is the best Red hat Package that you have tried for Debian and liked it ?

Thanks.

It is not removed in Debian. If you installed KDE, you get it. Maybe it's not been installed by default.

Fire up synaptic (or apt-get if you wish) and do a search for k3b. If you've set up repositories you should be able to get it easily enough.

I went to the main home page for k3b. k3b is listed as a download debian package and they have a site repository for it there.
However, here is the problem.

I seem to have an unstable distribution. It says there are broken dependencies and hence it will not work. I just did a major distro upgrade using synaptic and it says everything is fine. I did start with an unstable cd though.
Is there anyway I can make my system update to the Stable distro ? What are the challenges/limitations of working with unstable ?
This is indeed disappointing that I can't have k3b. Wonder what other software I am missing by having the unstable distro ?Any sites in this regard welcome.

Thanks in advance.

#deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
deb-src ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main

save that as /etc/apt/sources.list

and run apt-get update, and then k3b should appear.

The repositories are all the same for all branches (stable, testing and unstable).

But I suggest you change to "testing" and do this because Woody is quite ancient. I think you must do this after you change the line from stable to testing to upgrade Debian.

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

This will retrieve all the updates and upgrades and will download them. It will take a long time if you have a slow internet connection, so do it at night.

I actually checked. Originally, I had stable on my sources.list and it said distro upgrade complete in Synaptic. Not even sure why k3b cameup with that unstable message. This sure is causing a lot of confusion.

You have a great quote at the end of your message.

I tried to do a distro upgrade with unstable. This said ti will remove abiword and several k programs suchj as kword, kweather etc., all in all it said tiw ill remove 106 files. Also after setting the download mirror to unstable it is saying that it will remove WINE, presently I am getting Mondo.
All this is very scary and a great concern. A lot can happen if 106 files are removed.

I did this, at the end of the download it removed Wine and mondo doesn't work as well. I did a whereis mondo and nothing comesup. It gave an error when installing libc6 and asked me to shutdown gdm and xscreensaver
So, I rebooted and before X services started, I did apt-get -f install
It installed OK.

Very confusing.
