system update hosed my login...text only

after a system upgrade following a fresh install, I now only get a pretty login screen with all the system startups above the blinking cursor. All I can do is log in and it gives me a command line. Prettiest test boot I have ever seen, but since I am a command line idiot, it does me no good. Am using conectiva 10.0 with ati 9200 graphics card. It worked fine until the updates and reboot. Will someone tell me how to get back to normal?

thanx

You problem is probably either a new init scipt is not putting you into run level 5 at startup or your X config file got hosed. Try 'init 5' or 'startx' to see. I am not sure what x server you are using, but the config file is in /etc/X11, either XF86Config(-4) or xorg.conf. you can run through a script to set these up via the command line tools XF86Conf or xorgcfg. The run level is set in /etc/inittab usually (id:5:initdefault.
