Package groups not present

Hello,

I'm trying to install a desktop environment on CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core). I tried to run this:

Code:
yum groupinstall "X Window System"
...which resulted in this output:

Code:
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
There is no installed groups file.
Maybe run: yum groups mark convert (see man yum)
base | 2.9 kB 00:00:00
epel | 2.9 kB 00:00:00
updates | 2.9 kB 00:00:00
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
Warning: group X Window System does not exist.
Maybe run: yum groups mark install (see man yum)
No packages in any requested group available to install or update
Our SAs that build the VMs for us said they are aware of it, and that CentOS 7 came like that, and that they don't know why the DEVs changed it. Anyway, not sure if all that is true or not, but I've gotta get a desktop environment on these things for my developers. As I understand it, these package groups are merely XML files that yum reads for deploying the packages. At any rate, I would appreciate any suggestions you all might have in how best for me to move forward.

Thanks!

You could install Gnome if you'd like.

This system is not on the internet, so we don't use public repos, but here is the output of the command:

Code:
repo id repo name status
!base CentOS-7-Base 12,720

My first guess would be that whoever maintains your repos has not included the software you are looking for.

Your question sounds as if it should best be directed to your system admins.

Since the system is not connected to the internet I completely agree with frankbell.

-::-This is a task better handled by the System Administrator that has elevated privileges.-::-

Even if you downloaded a DE on a machine that does have an internet connection you wouldn't be able to install the pkg manually w/o root privileges. If you tried to use yum to install a DE that wouldn't work either w/o the repo's being in the repository etc/yum.repos.d/ configuration file.

During a fresh installation of the rebuild a DE should of been installed.

If you don't mind me asking; why wasn't a DE installed to begin with?

I don't see how you will be able keep the system up to date w/o a internet connection.

This issue was overcome by events. When I explained to the SAs that the group packages should be there, the reached out to the repo owner from whom they were syncing their repo and got the location of the XML files for the group packages and synced them.

To those that replied, thank you for taking time out of your day to offer up advice. Much appreciated!

You're Welcome.

So, are things solved?
