Hello there again, wonderful Linux world! Still learning/loving/experiencing Linux...
("Please bear with me, as I am a bit of a computer "dummy" overall...)
A little issue I came across with printing: "PRINTER PROPERTIES" INTERFACE ON MY LINUX MACHINE LACKS OPTIONS COMPARED TO MY OLD WINDOWS MACHINE.
I am attaching a screenshot of both side-by-side (accessing my Linux machine from Windows PC by RDP).
SO - is this a problem with the driver? Is it just that Cannon's Linux driver is not as good as their Windows one? Or is it something else?
Printer is a network printer, it is Cannon Image Runner Advanced (an advanced multi-function center, serious big machine for desktop publishing)
Model IR-ADV C5235/5240 PCL 5c
What I did is added the network printer, and it worked out, I can print now. (Mind you, there I might have missed something - searching for the network printer, I entered its local IP address; it gave me a few options under same IP address, with different ports and other descriptions, so I picked what I understood (Port1). It all worked out, but hopefully, it was the right thing to do ...)
Before I started, I actually found the drivers on Canon website and downloaded; went to install the .deb packages that came with it (three in all) - but for each one, got message from package manager that it is already installed (which is great, should have just trusted that Linux already took care of it for me).
It prints and all, but, as I said, the interface is lacking a bit.
Are there printing options missing in linux that you have in Windows and need back? I'd imagine the options presented are limited only by the application you're using.
You say the interface is lacking a bit. This is fine, that is your criticism. And I would agree it is valid.
However the best we can do here is to ask what specific controls are you looking for that you cannot find on the Linux variation.
As far as deeper interface concerns, there would be a few. One would be the desktop window management environment and the decorations of the windows. The other would be the printer properties applications available. It is a very common item for any OS, however there is usually one or two, and usually they're very much tied to the OS. Therefore an unfortunate path forwards to really make things more appealing for you, would be to convince developers to change the presentation of these attributes into a form you feel is more appropriate. Sorry, that's never an easy answer, and I'm sure you know that some developers may resist or see things differently.
Perhaps there are some software utilities out there which run under Linux and manage your printer interface with a different user interface. I've never searched much and instead used the default one. Meanwhile, I do not attempt to push the envelope for controlling the printer's attributes much, instead I print as little as possible out of habit.
