Intro to the SF Stuff

Posted 04-29-2009 at 11:45 AM by chexmix

I hope it isn't too OT to post this kind of thing here.

As was the case, I am sure, with many ITfolken, I grew up on science fiction, fantasy and [insert genre here]. After I toddled and twiddled off to a too-long stint in college(s), I stopped reading the stuff very much, though I would occasionally dip back in ...

... I worked at SCIFI.com in Manhattan for a couple of years, began to rediscover my math/science roots a few years later (they'd been buried under three...

CRUX Futzing

So I have this 14Gb-or-so partition on my mostly-stationary (now that I have a netbook) laptop -- a result of partly-inadvertantly blowing away the Debian install that lived there. I'd almost forgotten about it, but ...

... I've been playing lately with some of those mini-distributions (DSL, TinyCore, SliTaz) and somehow wound my way around to CRUX Linux, which has been around for a number of years now and which I have always been more or less tempted to try ... even though I am currently...

I got wireless working on the Asus 1000HE. It was pretty easy: I installed the madwifi drivers and -tools from slackbuilds.org, as well as wicd from the Slackware /extra repository, rebooted and ...

... when I brought up XFCE, there was a new icon in the upper right corner of my screen. In seconds I was connected to my work network. Nice!!

New Blinkenlights II: Blinkenlights vs. Predator

Waaaallll, I now have Slackware 12.2 installed on the Netbook. My promise to keep (and then post) an exhaustive record came to naught, mainly because the process was a tissue of error (e.g. kinda boring unless you are interested in items like "the Slackware CD #2 I burned appeared to have corrupted sectors on it" or "the thing boots so damned fast that I have to be ultrafast to get into the BIOS screens before bloody Windows takes over").

I tried AlienBob's method...

New Blinkenlights

After greedily eyeing ThinkPads for a time (I get a decent discount on some models at work), I veered off in a different direction, did some more research and bought myself one o' those netbook thangs.

It is very cute. It's an Asus 1000HE. Asus has ceased to ship these things with Linux, so this has the mephitic Windows XP on it. No! The lousy! It burns!

My initial plan is to get Slackware loaded onto the new machine (whether using Slackeee or some other method is as...
