Ubuntu Desktop Install Freezes at 90% "Configuring Hardware" ...

I was cruising along with no problems until BAM! The thing stuck on that screen for an hour or so before I accepted that it had frozen. The cursor could still be moved but I couldn't close the dialog box.

I tested the CD first and it checked out alright so it's not that. I burnt it slow etc. The liveCD seems to run all of my hardware fine in the demo mode so I see no reason why the full install should be so problematic.

Anyway, my system is a Toshiba Satellite A100 PSAA8C - 0FH00E.

Here is a specs sheet.

I am a linux noob so I would love a little guidance here. Tried some googling but didn't get much out of it.

EDIT: There is another problem here as well. The initial botched installation used up 10GB partition for effectively nothing. Now how do I scrap that wasted partition when I go to reinstall Ubuntu?

During installation there would be some way to display the progress textually. Usually pressing Esc or F1 etc. This would help pinpoint the step that is a stumbling block. Did the LAN/Network work in the live mode?

To get back the lost drive space, you can either reinstall in the same drive or use the partition tool to erase that drive and create a new one.

Try using the "alternate" CD - I always use it as it gives me a bit more control of the install. Also I've never trusted the GUI installer - particularly the partitioner; used to be bloody abysmal, now is slightly better.
You should get a good few more (useful) messages out of it (the alternate CD).

Thanks, the alternative install is available from the ubuntu site I assume? In terms of reclaiming the lost space. When I went to start the install again instead of reclaiming the space as near as I can tell it simply wanted to create a new partition and further partition between Ubuntu and Win XP. I think that enough of the OS was installed that it occupies that space but GRUB never finished so it is not in the boot menu. My LAN/Wireless worked in the LiveCD. I am not sure what would have caused the problem. Should I just install ubuntu and then use something like gparted to reclaim the bogus install?
