What problems might I have installing a 9.3 rpm under 10.2?

I am hoping to install the flight simulator Flightgear 0.9.3-91 (a bit old, I know) packaged for Suse 9.3 on my Suse 10.2 box.

Is it likely to fry my 10.2 installation, by e.g. overwriting critical files, or is it safe to try? If it does, is it possible to return the distro to its previous state without a complete re-install? Is this just a stupid thing to do?

What about using a more up-to-date version rpm-ed for Fedora 4? Is this a recipe for wreckage?

Cheers,

You could find out yourself whether installing the rpm would work by doing something like
Code:
$rpm -Uvh --test somefile.rpm
If you do not get any error messages then the installation will go smoothly. If you do, you need to work out where the problem is and fix it. The Fedora rpm may or may not work. Its one of those things thats trial and error.

Most likely problem is dependencies not satisfied by SuSE 10.2 because of changes between major versions (newer packages in 10.2 not working with an older application because the older app doesn't know about them).

Your best bet to make it work, is to try a .src.rpm if you can find one, and try to compile an installable binary for 10.2.

Actually even easier would be to go into software management and do a search for Flightgear to see if there is an updated version for 10.2 or if your current version comes up in the list than you know it's ok. It technically is just a game so I seriously doubt it will over write critical files.

You can also view the contents of the rpm file to see exactly what files are being added to your system.

If you haven't tried that try that first.
