Would anyone please poing me in the right direction on how to upgrade kernel to the latest one on my Suse 9.1 personal? Any directions would be appreciated or links to them?
I've found some generic directions but they are of no help as I get stuck, I've downloaded the latest kernel from Kernel.org but can't seem to be able to compile it. I get an error when I do 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig' :
gcc: cannot exec 'cpp0': No such file of derectory. (something like that) and followed by a couple of errors from Make in, what looks like, a script folder.
I can post the full errors if needed -- just thought there is another way.
Out of the box, I've been able to grab the newest kernel and compile them however my steps normally consist of make oldconfig. That way I know that I've got everything I need and I just remove or change the item to module as I see fit.
Most likely someone better than me will want the full error though.
Thanks a lot for all the responses, ... i will look further into that site.
Here is a little more on the error

Well I also had to install the missing RPMs, like GCC, its libraries, and Make --- they did not come on the CD so I had to find them on the internet.
Also, is there a difference for a RPM between i386, i586, or i686 ... aren't they all x86 architecture? I'm running this on my Sony laptop Celeron 600 (coppermine).
I must also say that I am very pleased as to how well it runns (cooler and quieter than XP) and that I didn't really have problems installing it nor the lack of drivers. Linux has really come a long way.
First of is my bad, I didn't look to see you had personal instead of professional.
The difference between the rpm for 386,586,and 686 is that they are optimized for that architecture. If you were using slack, you'd have to do a little optimizing since everything there is still optimized for 486 I think. By now, I'd suspect that SusE has their packages optimized for the i586 even though ftp installs still are located in the i386 directory.
