Question Upgrade to 9.3?

Since I am currently running 9.2, is it possible to download the 5 CD's of 9.3, or the DVD iso and update my SuSE to 9.3? Also, there is a little confusion on my part as to what category this version is Professional or Professional evaluation?

To further the question list, I assume the DVD live evaluation iso has the 5 CD installation included?

Well first of all SuSE 10 will be out on the 6th of October, so you might just want to wait for that. [openSuSE 10 RC1 is availabe now from www.opensuse.org]

But to answer your questions:

- Yes you can use the DVD or CDs of 9.3 to upgrade, but a clean install is recommended.

- The 'Evaluation' version is a Live DVD which you CAN NOT use to install SuSE.

Yeah waiting for version 10 would be nice, but will most of the bugs be out? Perhaps with the openSuSE angle this will be better than previous releases.

About the DVD iso, at the downloads sites that I have been at, the only DVD is available is the live eval. Where does one download the DVD installation iso, or can you?

You can download a LiveDVD version of 9.3 as well as an installable DVD (EVAL) version of 9.3. You may need to find another server, since not all of them mirror the complete SUSE server. The files should be named like this:

i386/9.3/iso/SUSE-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso //The installable version
i386/live-dvd-9.3/SL-9.3-LiveDVD-i386-1.iso //The LiveDVD

You could download the DVD iso via Bittorrent from http://www.interknet.net/bt/ [fully legal!]

Hey that's great. Thanks for the connection.

By the way, the specks on your machine look pretty nice, and I could not help but notice that you have a DVD ROM. Can you play movies without problesm or system lockups?

Wow that sucker is big , and I am not too keen on downloading the 32 bit butcher down version. Would it be wise to extract the contents of the ISO to another HDD and do a HDD install?

Update
Never mind. I am just downloading the 5 CD set, but not via bittorrent. Even with the 6881 port open download will take forever. Well close to it. Quicker with KGet.

Also, what is the risk of doing a distro upgrade with the CD set? Noted above that is not advisable. Why?

An update will try to preserve as many custom settings as possible. That means that some packages may not be configured to their full capability. Software that did not come with the original SUSE package has to be installed new anyway. So the best is to save you data and wipe out the old installation. I have a separate /home partition to be able to keep at least this data.

Thanks abisko00 That was a great explanation.

Since I am always either compiling and installing source, or building more up-to-date rpms, I may just stay with the 9.2 version. Seems pretty good. However, if I do decide to move into a newer version such as 9.3, then I will take your input into consideration, which makes total sense.

Cool Suse 9.3 to 10 upgrade

Hi every1

Is there a way to upgrade my SuSE 9.3 to 10.0 from ISO's. I don't have a CD-Rom or DVD-Rom in my server. I can upload the ISO's to it though. I have tried to add the mounted ISO as a source in yast. Is there something I am missing?

Thanks

AnRkey
