Suse 9.1 install no internet

I had been using different distros of linux and a friend gave me this suse cd. I'm not sure why but I didn't need to do an ftp install like it says you would have to on suse's homepage. ANyways I got the system up and running but I cannot connect to the internet. I am able to browse my local network though (and browse the windows files on other pcs). So I can do this why can't I get online? I would appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

You need to provide us with more information, ie. are you using modem or router?
If router, have you setup IP gateway or what? Where do you actually get the problem?

Regards,

It's a DSL connection with a Linksys WRT-54G router. It handles the PPPoE stuff and all other pcs on my lan are configured. I have setup a static ip/subnet/gateway. These settings must be successful because I am able to browse all pcs on my lan. But going to the web browser or to YaST I cannot connect to anything internet related.

open a terminal and type su
type ifconfig and then you should see your machines ip address

type route

make sure the ipaddress is on the same lan as the gateway

you should have three lines one marked as ug the default gateway.

If you are using a router make sure you can see it's setup page

go and ensure the dmz is not ticked

If you go to Yast you can set these again under network choosing your device to connect to the internet.

I'm not sure what this last line means as I don't see where it says use a particular device to connect to the internet. I have been working on this for hours, my ip/subnet/gateway are all set correctly. I can open my web browser and connect to my router (192.168.1.1) yet I still cannot get online.
