Question SUSE 11.1 vnc winXP

After a fresh install of open SUSE 11.1, network config and adding of repositories I tried to get vnc working.

The default set-up in yast was turned on, I am able to connect via browser as http://IP.OF.SERVER:5801 but the screen is just snow as you would see on a television with no signal.

I then removed the default vnc server and installed kdenetwork3-vnc. To no avail I received the same results as before.

I am not able to connect with Real vnc or Tight vnc. The firewall is disabled.

Is there something I am missing in the setup?

Please try to state the necessary info in a more easily readable fashion. For instance, I see that you have winxp in your title. What is it that you wish to accomplish? To control winxp via vnc on suse? What is the client and what is the server?

What do you have running for a vnc server on the server computer? Provide such info and it will be much easier for people to help you.

Sorry about that, I'll try to be clear.

I am trying to control the SUSE Desktop from a Windows XP client through a vnc viewer or web interface. I am able to connect via web browser but only receive a snowy screen upon connection.

The vnc server is SUSE 11.1 and clients are Windows XP.
I tried both the default KDE4 VNC server Krfb and kdenetwork3-vnc.

Both Real VNC and Tight VNC will not connect as clients from WindowsXP.

The SUSE firewall is disabled and connection is local LAN all behind another firewall so it will only accept local connections.

Okay my suggestion for windows is to use UltraVNC. It is the best client/server I have found for windows.

Next follow this article for setting up vnc
http://en.opensuse.org/VNC_HOWTO

Its not the best... I know there was a better article at one point. If you need help starting your preferred desktop environment or anything else, let me know. I'll have to get back to wiki editing and fix up that article at some point.

Thank you for the information.

As far as Ultra VNC, it does work as a client but is also spyware if you do a complete install or server only. It does not have any un-install application and the Windows un-installer does not work either. I just had to do a reinstall of Windows to get rid of it completely. Hence the reason I am moving to SUSE, to rid myself of most of the security issues with Windows.

Wow its like we have used completely different ultraVNC clients or something. I have had no spyware issues at all with ultravnc... I've had it installed in many different scenarios with different setups and options applied. Never had problems uninstalling it either. I guess its possible that just recently they've become devious. That would be a shame. Well, best of luck with the vnc, like a said before, don't hesitate to ask any questions if needed.

Just a suggestion...why don't you use NOmachine...it's free and I have used it with KDE and Gnome with any issues.
